Millennial Assumptions

No matter what generation you belong to, you’ve heard blanket statements about millennials. The overall conclusion is that we are lazy, disloyal, and make impulsive decisions. While these are frustrating to hear, replying with a sharp tongue will not change a person’s perception. Below are some millennial assumptions and how to respond to them.

“Millennials don’t want to work for anything because they want everything handed to them on a silver platter.”

Show up on time. Even when it seems that everyone else arrives to work late. Simply being on time will show that you are serious about getting the job done.

Learn something new. Your job description is a guideline, not a box that you have to stay in forever. If you want to learn new skills, ask to work on a project outside of your normal job duties. Show that you are working to advance to the next level, wherever that may be.

Exceed expectations. Do you have a report due on Friday? Submit it on Thursday. Within reason, find ways to go the extra mile.

“Millennials are disloyal to organizations.”

Write down what’s important to you. The list can include anything from free coffee in the office to zero contact during off hours. Does your current organization match the list?

Decide whether or not the organization is being loyal to you. Don’t worry about what others think when it’s time to decide what’s best for you. If you are suffering from anxiety or exhaustion, staying in a workplace that you are unhappy is detrimental to your physical and mental health. If taking care of yourself means that you are disloyal, so be it.

” Millennials are only concerned with the present, making decisions without considering the future. “

Be confident in your decisions. Remember that you don’t have to have your life planned out down to the second. Do you want to be a Director of a company? Start your own business? Create an opportunity for others to give back? Let people know that while you may not have it all figured out, your decisions are steps to achieve your goals.

Millennials; you are creative, hard-working, and resilient, just like members of other generations.

Don’t let negative assumptions get to your head,

Tiara
